Health authorities have warned of a deadly Tennessee drug that caused a deadly heart attack this week.
The price of drugs, including some heart medications, rose sharply Monday, after a Tennessee lawmaker said the price of prescription drugs increased sharply.
Tennessee Rep. Bill Cady, a Democrat from Tennessee’s 1st congressional district, asked the Food and Drug Administration to approve a generic version of the heart drug Nexium, an ingredient in the heartburn drug Nexium. He added that generic makers should be able to produce the version in a relatively short period of time.
“I think generic manufacturers can do a better job of setting their prices,” Cady said Monday, referring to generic drugs that are not yet available.
A generic Nexium is sold in the United States, and it costs about $1 per tablet. That’s less than half the $4.50 cost of a brand-name prescription drug. Nexium and other heartburn drugs are manufactured in India and China, Cady said.
The cost of generic Nexium is less than 20 percent of the price of a brand-name prescription drug, he said, adding that he would not be surprised to see generic manufacturers of heartburn drugs like Prilosec, Prevacid, and Nexium switch to cheaper generic versions.
Cady’s question was an act of desperation, and he has taken action against the generic makers. He has introduced legislation that would require generics to offer the same protection to consumers as brand-name drugs, but now he wants to stop the companies from selling them.
Cady said he is also working with the FDA to ensure the safety of generic drugs and to help consumers get the medication they need from online pharmacies that sell the generic drug.
“There is absolutely no reason to think that an individual with an allergy to aspirin could not have done this,” Cady said.
The FDA has not issued a warning to consumers in connection with this case. It has asked for an expedited hearing and is working with the agency on a plan to expedite this process.

Cady, who is a Democrat, is looking to cut his political outbursts.
“If this drug is approved for use,” he said, “it will not be safe.”
Cady, who is a former member of the Tennessee General Assembly and has been a member of the Senate since 2007, also wants the Food and Drug Administration to approve generic versions of his drugs.
He said he has heard similar questions about Nexium and Prilosec.
“I am going to fight for the generic companies who can do this to save the American people,” Cady said.
